Portrait: Real to Surreal

Portrait: Real to Surreal

Thu | Mar 4-Apr 8 | 6:30 PM-8:30 PM
6 Sessions
Ages: 14 yrs. to 99 yrs. | $170 | Luba Shapiro Grenader

We will begin by studying the formal structure of head and facial features, creating volume and rendering of the form, analyzing value distribution, and foreshortening. Alongside, students will experiment breaking away from the form in search of more individualized expression exploring the abstract, symbolic, surreal, or conceptual interpretation of portraiture.  Work will be done from self, photographs, or memory.
The structure of the online class will include slide and sample artwork presentations on the topics mentioned, demonstrations, individual discussions via zoom breakout rooms (splitting from the main online class meeting), and group critiques through on-screen work-sharing and live discussions. For the duration of the course, students will have access to individual communication with the instructor between classes.

Materials: basic drawing materials for initial sketching, mediums, and surfaces of choice
